Narrated from the point of view of the other selves, the book gave me a really different reading experience like I said earlier and one that I highly recommend. How she discovers these parts of her and how they take over as well as control her and her actions on many occasions was scarily real on many levels. Set in the cultural realities of the belief in OGBANJE, Ada starts to unravel as the seeming truth of herself and the many parts she is made up of start to rear their ugly heads as they take part in her life and take her life apart. The dark and twisted natures of these other selves is a revelation, in my opinion, of our minds as human beings and even a description, in some way, of a case of multiple personalities syndrome. Emezi takes us on a journey into the splintered existence of Ada and all the others that make up her ‘personalities’. The book is about Adas journey with these forces within her and questions whether Ada will be. Its a different feel to the books I have read, an irregular and refreshing journey into the psyche of the main character Ada and those who exist within her.Ī. Akawaeki Emezis Freshwater is a lyrical and playful book told from shifting first person accounts that explores the internal life of protagonist Ada as she tries to contend with the many voices in her head coming from non-human, spiritual entities. All I can say that I do not regret picking it up this unconventional novel. I cannot recall where I first came across the book or what drew me in, making me want to read it. Not sure if it will only be Nigerian/African works or all books in general but I will decide in time.įirst up is FRESH WATER by Akwaeke Emezi. So now I am rediscovering them and will be sharing reviews of books that I read. Between work and being exhausted almost all the time, I found it hard to pursue my joys. I used to love reading till adulthood took over and time seemed to never be enough.
